Purge, Purge, Purge

When it comes to organization the first step is always to purge. The reality is, most of us keep many more items than we actually use. If you need hard numbers to decide what to keep here’s what Real Simple suggests.

Try to limit yourself to three sets of sheets per bed and as few as three sets of bath sheets or towels, hand towels, and washcloths per person (more if you change towels daily, fewer if the men in your household have never picked up a washcloth). This gives you one set in use, one in the hamper, and one in the closet ready for action. You’ll need only one or two sets for guests (one on the bed and one in the hamper or closet).

To make the purge step easier automatically get rid of any sheets or towels that have ripped hems or ragged edges. You know you’ve had those same linens in your closet for more than a decade. It’s probably time to bid more than a few of them adieu.

Label It Up

You may be perfection at keeping things organized, but if there is even one other person in your home (particularly spouses or children) you may want a more detailed organization plan. Better Homes & Gardens encourages using labels.

Keep linens organized based on where you plan to use them. Sort sheets for each bedroom in the house into their own storage bins so finding the right set is always easy.

How to Fold Those Sheets???

Ok, ok, we know what you’re thinking. Organized linen closets are all well and good, but how do you actually fold those darn sheets?!! Imperfect Homemaking has a full tutorial. We particularly loved their tips for putting sheet sets inside the pillowcase. That’s pure genius!

Method 1: Place the sheets inside the pillowcase and fold the excess pillow case under.
Method 2:  Fold the pillowcase in thirds lengthwise and then wrap across the stacked sheets.
Method 3: Simply fold the pillowcase and place on top of the sheets
Method 4: Fold the pillowcase lengthwise to make it the same width as your folded sheets.  Wrap around both sheets creating a nice smooth front to display in your linen closet.
