Whether your winter was long or short it’s finally time to put the warm stuff away in preparation for summer weather. Here are some of our tips for how to store winter gear.
How to Store Winter Gear
Winter Coats
Winter coats, by nature, are large bulky items. So we wondered if there was a space saving way to store them. Good Housekeeping had some great ideas!
Do up buttons, zip up zippers, and empty out pockets; then hang structured or down coats on thick hangers inside a breathable garment bag. Polyfill-stuffed coats can go in vacuum-seal bags, compressed halfway for space.
We’re ready to put those coats far, far away! How about you? Bring on the warm weather, pools, picnics, and backyard barbecues.
Boots, Hats, Gloves
The accessories of winter can often be difficult to store. How many times have you had to buy new gloves because one is missing? Or no matter where you look, you can’t find your favorite stocking cap? The Spruce has these interesting suggestions for storing boots, hats, and gloves!
In my home, we keep hats, gloves, and scarfs stashed in our entryway during the winter. When spring rolls around those items are used to stuff my tall winter boots so, they keep their shape. Here’s how:
- I make sure my boots are clean and dry inside and out. This chore involves brushing all the debris from the bottom and wiping down the exterior and interior of each boot.
- I place a sachet of baking soda inside each boot and let it sit for 24 hours.
- The next day I take the sachet out and replace it with a fresh one.
- Afterward I line each boot with a thin, clean rag made from an old sheet or shirt.
- Next I stuff clean winter hats, scarfs and gloves into airtight food storage bags.
- Then I use the filled storage bags to stuff my boots.
When the task is complete, my boots are placed on a shelf in my closet. The shelf is one foot above the floor. I keep my warm weather shoes under the shelf.
What a great idea for storage! Compact, and all in one place. Say goodbye to missing winter accessories.
Sweaters
If you want to make space for your favorite sun dresses, tank tops, and summer gear it may be time to store away those bulky sweaters. Good Housekeeping advises you store sweaters in plastic bins until cool weather returns.
Fold into thirds, then in half, and stack in a plastic bin with heaviest knits on the bottom. Place white tissue paper between layers if color transfer is a concern or to keep any embellishments from snagging.
