Repurpose Furniture

While you can’t install closet systems in a rental, you can add furniture to your closet. IHeartOrganizing has these suggestions to share.

Utilize a tall bookcase as a temporary closet.  With adjustable shelving, boots and shoes are able to be stored below while a few hooks above offer hanging storage.

Take a look around your house to see what furniture might be repurposed  to serve as organization for your messy closet. Use a bookshelf to store folded clothes, or to store shoes. Use baskets on the bookshelf to give you additional storage solutions. You could also add a small dresser or stackable drawers to organize your lingerie, your t-shirts, or your pajamas. Lean a ladder against the wall to add additional hanging space, or simply as a spot to dry your hand washed clothes.

Removable Hooks

It’s true that renters can’t drill holes in the wall, but there is another solution for adding hooks to your closet. Unclutterer loves to use removable hooks.

Apply removable items. I am a huge fan of utilitarian and decorative removable hooks. They’re great for getting so many things up and off the floor.

There are several brands of removable hooks to choose from. Be sure to consider the weight of the items you want to hang. This will determine which hooks you use. You can even find fun hooks to add a bit of whimsy to your apartment closet.

Hooks can help you store hats and belts, but they are also great for organizing accessories. Do you have lots of jewelry? Or scarves? Designate a wall to hang several hooks to keep your accessory stash within easy reach. Hanging accessories also add a lovely design element to your closet. Bonus!

Hanging Organizers

Hanging organizers can offer storage solutions without causing you to break your renters agreement. Unclutterer has tips for using hanging organizers.

Use existing hardware to support alternatives. Hang a closet doubler from a rod to extend hanging area in the vertical space. Over-the-door storage pockets, baskets, and specialty items can be helpful.

A closet doubler will…well, double your hanging space. If you have a lot of clothes, this may be a great solution for you. Hang your summer clothes on one rod and your winter clothes on the other. Be sure to leave some single hanging space for long dresses or pants. Over-the-door storage organizers can hold not only shoes, but also sweaters or t-shirts or hats. You could also find hanging drawers to add organizational solutions. Drawers are a great way for storing socks or pajamas. Consider what items are causing you organization strife and then decide which type of organizer will work best for you. There are many ways to create your own organizational solutions.
