Once you’ve got everything sorted into separate categories, organize clothes by color. Remember that grade-school acronym, Roy G. Biv? Now is the time to use it! Organize by color: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Keep white and black on opposite ends.
One benefit of color organization is that it allows you to get a clear picture of what colors you have. Is your wardrobe heavy in blues and light on…anything else? Color coding allows you to see at a glance if you have way to many items in one color family. On the plus side, it also helps you see what items would go well together.

If you literally cringe at the thought of having pants mixed in with shirts and sweaters then perhaps organizing by item would be a better fit. CNN Money has these tips to share.
Organize by silhouette, not color. “No one wakes up saying, ‘I am having a purple day,'” said Amy Salinger, a personal stylist. “It’s more about who you will be seeing that day, how you’re feeling and the weather.”
She recommended organizing a wardrobe based on silhouette and then by style. So all the pants go together and then that section is broken down by type: skinny, wide leg, trouser, etc.
When you organize by type and then silhouette you can easily find the items that fit the occasion or the weather. That is a big plus for busy people, or for those of us that like to hit snooze 18 times and are always running late in the morning!
Why not both?
If you are drawn to the look of a color coordinated closet, but like the functionality of organization by item why not incorporate both? First sort your clothing by type. Hang all the shirts together, and the pants together. Then within the category you can organize by color. It turns out you can have your rainbow cake and eat it too!
