Do you have enough clothes to outfit an army year round, but a closet the size of your pinky finger? Whether you live in an apartment, or an older home with limited closet space, we can help. Try these small closet organization tips and your friends will have serious Closet Envy.
Make it Work
Small closets may be itty bitty in size but they can present some huge challenges. The biggest one being, how to fit all your stuff into a small space while still being able to see everything you need. You don’t want your belongings to end up so packed in that you can’t find anything. Who knows when you’ll need those fabulous bangle bracelets from the 80s, or your newest pair of dancing shoes? There are several ways you can maximize the space in your small closet without maximizing your budget.
The first step in small closet organization is to use all of your vertical space. Assess your closet to look for areas that are going unused. Consider creating a section of floor to ceiling baskets to store t-shirts or pajamas.
Baskets can be a great way to maximize storage for like items. Put your most used items between waist and eye level. You don’t want to have to bend or stretch for the things you use every day. The baskets near the bottom can be used for things you need less frequently such as seasonal items. Reserve the baskets at the top for items that you only need periodically (like those 80s bangle bracelets and those 7 bridesmaid dresses you can’t seem to part with).
Get Hooked Up
Do you have blank wall space in your small closet? Hooks are a great way to utilize any space you have. Better yet, add a series of hooks. They can store anything from jewelry, to belts, to hats, or even jackets.
Hooks are a great way to use the small space on either end of your closet. You know, the wall that’s the depth of your tiny closet. It’s not big enough for a hanging rod, probably not enough space for a basket, so fill that wall up with hooks. We feel like the Oprah of closet organization…you get a hook…YOU get a hook…EVERYTHING GETS A HOOK!
You Gotta Move It
Don’t look now, but your closet just moved! No, this isn’t a Stephen King movie, and your closet isn’t on wheels. BUT, your hanging rods and baskets can be mobile! It’s a great way to make your favorite items more accessible in a small space. Consider how your ties, belts, or scarves might work better on a moving rod. That’s a lot of bang for your tiny space organizational buck.
Pull out shoe racks are another great way to utilize every inch of space. Have a shoe addiction? House Beautiful suggests arranging your shoes heel to toe to fit even more of those beauties on there. That right there is genius! Mama’s gotta have space for all her dancing shoes, am I right?!!
Think Outside the Closet
Have you given up on using that teeny tiny closet to store clothes? HGTV suggests thinking of the closet as an extension of the room where it’s located. Perhaps it can serve as a small office space you can close away at the end of the work day. Or a secret play nook for the children in your life. Or maybe even wall to wall bookshelves for your favorite works of fiction. We officially give you permission to think outside the box when it comes to your closet!
