You've been browsing photos of dream closets on Pinterest. Have the closet islands been catching your eye? Are you wondering if there is any way you could incorporate a closet island into your space? Here are our best tips for deciding if a closet island is right for you.

Do you have enough space?

The first step is to determine if you have enough space for a closet island. If you can stand in your closet and touch all four walls without moving your feet then you probably don’t have room for a closet island. If you if your closet is tad bit larger than a postage stamp then you may have the room you need. The first step is to decide how large of an island you want in your closet.

One tip is to use paper or tape to mask off the island foot print. Spend a week or so walking around that space and see what you think. Is there still enough room in your closet to move? Should the island be bigger or smaller? Would another location work better. Live with your options before you spend your hard earned dollars on a permanent solution.

Island or Peninsula?

The geography buffs out there know the difference between an island and a peninsula, but for the rest of us here’s a quick cheat sheet. An island has space all the way around, whereas a peninsula is attached on one end and only has space on three sides. Got it? Now while I’ve got you dreaming of a beach vacation, let’s talk closets!

A peninsula gives you a bit more walking space in the closet while still offering the storage solutions of an island. Both have great features and allow you a counter space along with the storage.

The main reason to choose an island over a peninsula is floor space. A peninsula will work better in a smaller closet, but if you have the space you can go all out with a gorgeous island. We think it’s time to make your closet dreams come true!

DIY your own!

If you are a tiny bit handy (we’re talking follow step by step assembly directions kind of handy) then you can DIY your own island. Many furniture items can be used as closet island. Lisa Adams of LA Closet Design shared these tips with the Today Show.

You don’t have to spring for the crazy costs of fully custom built-ins in order to have a perfectly organized space. “Think about flipping cabinets or shelving units on their heads, literally — [they] could make great island pieces in your closet,” Adams says.

One way she suggests getting a closet island for less? An Ikea bookshelf turned on its side, as Adams did for influencer-blogger Chriselle Lim. “Ta-da! You instantly have an island with cubbies,” Adams says. “Islands are functional and beautiful in a closet — to fold and pack while displaying items on the top

Think about the footprint and height you want before you head out shopping. Then look for furniture that fits. A bookshelf on it’s side, a dresser, a bathroom vanity, or kitchen cabinet all have the potential to serve as your island base. You will likely want at least two of whatever you choose so that you can put the furniture pieces back to back. Then all it takes is a top to create your very own closet island.

Are Sliding Closet Doors Right for You

When thinking about a closet redo one item is often overlooked…the closet doors! With choices like hinged doors, bi-fold doors, and sliding doors it’s hard to know what to choose. Are sliding closet doors right for you? Read more and find out!

Sliding Doors vs Hinged Doors

First lets discuss the basic differences between sliding doors and hinged doors. One set slides, and the other set swings open on hinges. Well, now that we have that sorted. 😉 Only kidding. There is a bit more to it than that.

LivSpace.com shares these advantages of Hinged Doors:

  • Improved visibility

It is easier to spot things when you open the doors as you get the entire view of the wardrobe. Unlike sliding doors, hinged doors do not conceal one side of the closet.

  • More hanging space

With hinged doors, you can hang your accessories like sling bags, scarves or belts on the back of the doors.

  • Color and finish options

Since hinged doors have been in the market for a long time, they come in various styles and colors.

Hinged doors are a more traditional option for many closets. They are the typical choice for walk in closets. One disadvantage of hinged doors is the space they take up when the door opens and closes. You must take that into consideration when arranging furniture in your room.

On the flip side, or shall we say the sliding side,  LivSpace.com shares these advantages of sliding doors:

  • Extensive length

Sliding door closets favor expansive spaces that can house a lengthy closet.

  • Contemporary style

One will have to agree that sliding door closets add an air of panache to any room. Mirrored sliding doors can give you both style and functionality in one very easy-to-maintain package.

Sliding doors are great for reach in closets. They are more compact and don’t take up any floor space. Not to mention the sleek contemporary design which appeals to many. The nature of  sliding doors does mean you can’t see the entire closet all at once. One solution is to keep off season clothes on one side, and current outfits on the other.

How to Hang Sliding Doors

If you enjoy DIY then you can hang sliding doors yourself. WikiHow has step by step instructions to help you get started. They also offer this advice:

Sliding doors are a stylish, modern way to finish your closet. With the right hardware, installing sliding closet doors on your own is simple. The key to professional-looking doors is taking the right measurements before your installation.

This is a situation where the old adage, “Measure twice, cut once” definitely holds true. If you take time to carefully measure and prepare you will have lovely sliding doors before you know it.

Walk-In Closet Lighting

Warm or Cold?

Are you a fan of warm or cool light? There are reasons you might prefer one over the other. The designers at Closet Envy know how to design with both warm and cool lighting.

Cool or warm actually refers to the color temperature of the light. Cool light looks more blue and warm light looks more yellow. The cooler the light the more it resembles daylight.

Cool light works great in modern closets with glossy finishes. It has a bright and clean look. Warm light is perfect for a closet full of wood tones. The warmer light really brings out the grain in the wood. There’s a lot to consider when you begin to look at what type of lighting you want in your closet.

Another logistical thing to consider is light bulb safety. Lighting in a closet should be covered with a shade of some kind. It is considered a fire hazard otherwise. Keep it covered to keep things safe!

Look Up!

Every closet needs an overhead light. It doesn’t have to be a bare bulb or builder grade flush mount light. Take your closet from boring to blingy with a fabulous chandelier.  You don’t have to be a princess to feel like one every day.

If your closet doesn’t have wired lighting there are battery operated options out there. You can even invest in motion sensor style lights. Whether you go for fashion or function (or both!) it’s time for your closet to see the light!

Is It Black or Blue?

Does this shirt match these pants? Do I have on two different shoes? Is this shirt black or blue? These are the questions you may be asking yourself if your closet lacks lighting. In addition to overhead lights consider adding lights above each closet rod. From that point on you will be able to see exactly what your clothes look like together. No more leaving the house wearing one blue shoe and one black shoe! Don’t pretend it hasn’t happened, we’ve all been there.

How to Create A Showcase Closet

Have you ever dreamed of turning your overstuffed closet into a design masterpiece? With Closet Envy at your side you can have your very own showcase closet.

Storage vs Showcase

The first step in creating the closet of your dreams is to shift your mindset. Yes, any closet should be all about storage. But in a showcase closet your favorite items aren’t just stored, they are on display.

Have you ever dreamed of turning your overstuffed closet into a design masterpiece? With Closet Envy at your side you can have your very own showcase closet.

One key element to creating a stunning closet is to utilize plenty of space. Rather than crowding your closet with as many things as it can hold, give each item the space it needs to shine. Highlight your favorite shoes, purses, and accessories by putting them on display. Leave several low shelves available for housing your shoe collection. Add vertical shelves to hold your favorite purses and bags. For items that need to be stored but aren’t as display worthy consider a collection of decorative boxes. That way your items are still easily accessible without cluttering up your shelves.

Fashion Meets Function

Your showcase closet can be just as pretty underneath the surface as it is on the outside. The more organized your closet is, the easier it will be to keep everything neat and clean.

Divided drawers are the perfect place to feature your favorite accessories. Just because they aren’t on display for everyone to see doesn’t mean they can’t be displayed just for you. It’s so much easier to find the perfect necklace, bracelet, or cufflinks when they are given their own storage space.

Your closet is not the only showcase space in the house. You might also want a way to showcase your favorite outfit. A Valet pull-out bar is a great way to hang the outfit you plan to wear tomorrow, or the dry cleaning you still need to put away. Just the word valet makes you sound Downton Abbey kind of fancy. We all definitely need more of that kind of luxury in our lives.

Another tip for making your closet look streamlined is to use matching hangers. When all the hangers in your closet are identical your eye sees it as uniform and clean. This allows the rest of your closet to be the showstopper rather than focusing on a row of mismatched hangers.

Design and Lighting

The last thing to consider when creating your showcase closet is the design and lighting. Your dream closet is the perfect place to indulge in your favorite finishes and elements. This is a space that’s just for you. Which is why Mansion Global encourages you to add luxe touches.

Luxe touches include full-length mirrors, chandeliers, in-cabinet lighting, fabric drawer inserts, an island with a cosmetic refrigerator, safe and/or coffee station, packing tables, and beautiful decorative hardware. Seating, in the way of ottomans, poufs, a settee, sofa, or bench, can elevate the look and feel.

There are so many ways to add high end design elements to turn your walk in closet into a stunning showcase.

Some design details, like lighting, may seem small but they have a huge impact. Shelving with back lighting or up lights really add that extra wow factor to your display. Lots of bright white light can help you pull together the perfect outfit. Light also helps you dial down the clown factor when applying makeup. Let your closet help you showcase your good looks!
