Closet Envy featured on Good Morning Texas

We are SO excited that our very own Senior Designer Rhonda Ray based in Dallas, Texas was featured on Good Morning Texas yesterday morning! She showcased our gorgeous closets in the Booth Brothers Homes model at Montgomery Farm in Allen, Texas!

If you missed it live, watch it below:

In it she emphasizes how important closets are to your daily life. They are where you start & end your day. If they are cluttered & not functional, they can really effect your life in a major way!

She also pointed out that we include 4 free hours of on-site Professional Organization with every project of $4,000 or more! We only partner with the best, licensed professional organizers to make sure that our clients get the very best!

Some of our clients enjoy utilizing the Professional Organizing services both before & after we install their new closet. First to declutter their closets & ensure that only the correct items stay, and then to organize their newly installed closet by putting away all of their items! How much would this impact your life to have a master closet that is both gorgeous and fully functional?

She also mentioned that we will SOON have 20… that’s right… TWENTY new colors to choose from exclusively at The Closet Envy to completely customize your dream closet! We are so excited to show you all the new line of product! More on that soon… stay tuned to our blog to learn more!

I Just had a Brand New Closet Envy System Installed… Now what?

So you’ve decided to make an incredible investment in your home by having The Closet Envy install a custom closet system! Congratulations! Now that you have the perfect functional and beautiful blank canvas to work with, you can start to fill it with your own items!

If you’re wanting your closet to look absolutely Pinterest-worthy, it’s important to keep your new space as streamlined as possible by arranging each item of clothing appropriately. In order to utilize your brand new closet in the most efficient way possible, remember to keep unnecessary items (aka clutter) far away!

Utilize these 8 Pro-Tips:

  1. Group like with like: Since your clothing & accessories have already been removed before your Closet Envy System was installed, now is the perfect opportunity to group your items! Start by sorting your hanging clothes by type. Divide your clothing by person (should you be sharing a closet with your significant other). Then, divide the clothing by work, casual, and dressy attire. (*NOTE: leave your sweaters in a separate pile, you’ll see why soon!) Next, you should sort these items further by type… pants, skirts, dresses, shirts, blouses, etc. Now that you have these groups sorted out, sort them further by length… short sleeved shirts to long sleeved, short dresses to long dresses, tight fitting pants to looser ones, etc. Now it’s time to hang! Make sure you keep a little bit of space in between each section to save time searching!
  2. Organize shoes by type: Did you get a jaw-dropping highly illuminated Closet Envy shoe wall like this one? Make sure to do it justice by sorting your shoes by type, color, and “prettiness.” Pro-tip: When organizing heels, make sure to have one pointing towards the wall, and one facing outward as shown in this photo!
  3. Hang your pants on top: Wait… what? It may seem more than a bit odd to have your pants on top when their worn… on bottom… if you follow this tip you will get the illusion of more space because your pants will inevitably take up less space than your shirts. So: start by folding your pants in half, and then hanging them on the top rod! If you’d rather not have your pants hung, they can also be folded and placed on your shelves instead.
  4. Add baskets to cubby spaces: There are endless designs of baskets to match with any decor. These baskets are the perfect place to keep socks, bathing suits, and other smaller items. Storing these items in baskets will create greater visibility, allowing you to easily find exactly what you need, unlike if you were to keep them in drawers.
  5. Stack (don’t hang!!) sweaters systematically: Pro-Tip: sweaters should not be hung because hangers can pull the threads at the shoulders which would cause major damage over time! EEK! So, to avoid the unraveling of your gorgeous sweaters, fold them and keep them on your custom shelving! How to sort them? First by weight, then by color, and stack them no more than five high. When you create short stacks of sweaters, they will naturally break up your pieces by season which will save precious time when you need to find that exact sweater to wear on a given day. Another good reason for shorter sweater stacks: these piles will fit perfectly between your
    brand new shelves!
  6. Organizing belts: Sort them first by purpose, and then separate these belts by color.  Next, hang them (or roll them into a basket) and place them in a low-traffic location to keep them out of the way but still accessible!
  7. Divide your scarves by knitted or cloth: Did your custom closet come with diamond-shaped nooks? These are the perfect spot to roll thick scarves and easily see what you’re working with! If you didn’t get these custom nooks, you can also fold your thicker scarves & store them on a shelf or in a basket & then hang your lightweight scarves by length so they’re easier to locate as needed!
  8. Don’t allow unworthy items: Do you have random promotional T-shirts, clothes you haven’t worn in years, wire dry-cleaner hangers, or orphan socks still in your possession? These items will just clutter your beautiful new space! Take stock of any undesirable items and consider donating old items, and store pieces you just can’t part with elsewhere!

Sometimes children’s rooms have more closet space than their little clothes actually need. Why not turn the extra space into something extra fun?!! Märta shared with Dos Family how she converted a closet at her mother’s house for her niece.

For the bottom shelf she bought an old mattress at a flea market and made a new cover for it. This makes a nice seating place . She used the stuffing out of old pillows to make the cloud-like cushions.

A Minimalist Closet

Many of us feel drawn to the look of a minimalist closet. Your closet may be stuffed to the gills, but there are steps you can take to create the minimalist look you desire.

A Minimalist Closet

It Starts with a Purge

The only way to create a truly minimalist closet is to have more of a minimal wardrobe. The trend is definitely moving toward the less-is-more end of the spectrum. Tiny houses are popping up everywhere, and people have a strong desire for the simple life. So why not take that desire for simplicity into your closet?!!

Cincy Chic has these tips for getting started.

Start by taking all the clothing items out of your closet that you haven’t worn in the last month. Try on each piece of clothing and ask yourself a few questions:

  • Does it fit?
  • Is it flattering?
  • Does it fit your life style?
  • Does it need repaired or tailored?

As you begin to sort through the clothes you really need, you can start to create the space you’ve been dreaming of in your closet!

One is Enough

How many white tee shirts do you really need? Or black sweaters?Becoming a Minimalist reminds us to embrace the idea of one!

Consider the idea of one. If one can be enough, embrace it. Rather than owning an entire assortment, try owning just your favorite black dress, belt, handbag, or jacket (just to name a few ideas). A closet filled with only things you love and use will be a closet that you love to use.

One item that fits really well, makes you feel good, and coordinates with many things. Those are the types of clothes that belong in your minimalist closet!

Create Repetition

Once you have your clothes pared down you can start to create the simply sophisticated style you are hoping for. DIY Network has these ideas for a minimalist look.

Invest in quality hangers. Having mismatched plastic and wire hangers instantly make a closet look more cluttered and disorganized. Using only one style will give a more streamlined look to your display. High-end metal or wood hangers always look great, and with fewer clothes, you won’t have to buy as many hangers.

Many of us feel drawn to the look of a minimalist closet. Your closet may be stuffed to the gills, but there are steps you can take to create the minimalist look you desire. #designyourhappyplace #closetenvy

In addition to matching hangers, consider using neutral colors to streamline your design. Covered storage options will also help you create the minimalist look you crave. Hide the clutter behind doors, or in gorgeous storage boxes.

She also had a lot of beautiful handbags to display. Glass fronted cabinets make her purses a focal point in the closet.

Closet Islands

You’ve been browsing photos of dream closets on Pinterest. Have the closet islands been catching your eye? Are you wondering if there is any way you could incorporate a closet island into your space? Here are our best tips for deciding if a closet island is right for you.

You've been browsing photos of dream closets on Pinterest. Have the closet islands been catching your eye? Are you wondering if there is any way you could incorporate a closet island into your space? Here are our best tips for deciding if a closet island is right for you.

Do you have enough space?

The first step is to determine if you have enough space for a closet island. If you can stand in your closet and touch all four walls without moving your feet then you probably don’t have room for a closet island. If you if your closet is tad bit larger than a postage stamp then you may have the room you need. The first step is to decide how large of an island you want in your closet.

You've been browsing photos of dream closets on Pinterest. Have the closet islands been catching your eye? Are you wondering if there is any way you could incorporate a closet island into your space? Here are our best tips for deciding if a closet island is right for you.

One tip is to use paper or tape to mask off the island foot print. Spend a week or so walking around that space and see what you think. Is there still enough room in your closet to move? Should the island be bigger or smaller? Would another location work better. Live with your options before you spend your hard earned dollars on a permanent solution.

Island or Peninsula?

The geography buffs out there know the difference between an island and a peninsula, but for the rest of us here’s a quick cheat sheet. An island has space all the way around, whereas a peninsula is attached on one end and only has space on three sides. Got it? Now while I’ve got you dreaming of a beach vacation, let’s talk closets!

You've been browsing photos of dream closets on Pinterest. Have the closet islands been catching your eye? Are you wondering if there is any way you could incorporate a closet island into your space? Here are our best tips for deciding if a closet island is right for you.

A peninsula gives you a bit more walking space in the closet while still offering the storage solutions of an island. Both have great features and allow you a counter space along with the storage.

The main reason to choose an island over a peninsula is floor space. A peninsula will work better in a smaller closet, but if you have the space you can go all out with a gorgeous island. We think it’s time to make your closet dreams come true!

DIY your own!

If you are a tiny bit handy (we’re talking follow step by step assembly directions kind of handy) then you can DIY your own island. Many furniture items can be used as closet island. Lisa Adams of LA Closet Design shared these tips with the Today Show.

You don’t have to spring for the crazy costs of fully custom built-ins in order to have a perfectly organized space. “Think about flipping cabinets or shelving units on their heads, literally — [they] could make great island pieces in your closet,” Adams says.

One way she suggests getting a closet island for less? An Ikea bookshelf turned on its side, as Adams did for influencer-blogger Chriselle Lim. “Ta-da! You instantly have an island with cubbies,” Adams says. “Islands are functional and beautiful in a closet — to fold and pack while displaying items on the top

You've been browsing photos of dream closets on Pinterest. Have the closet islands been catching your eye? Are you wondering if there is any way you could incorporate a closet island into your space? Here are our best tips for deciding if a closet island is right for you.

Think about the footprint and height you want before you head out shopping. Then look for furniture that fits. A bookshelf on it’s side, a dresser, a bathroom vanity, or kitchen cabinet all have the potential to serve as your island base. You will likely want at least two of whatever you choose so that you can put the furniture pieces back to back. Then all it takes is a top to create your very own closet island.

Are Sliding Closet Doors Right for You

When thinking about a closet redo one item is often overlooked…the closet doors! With choices like hinged doors, bi-fold doors, and sliding doors it’s hard to know what to choose. Are sliding closet doors right for you? Read more and find out!

Sliding Doors vs Hinged Doors

First lets discuss the basic differences between sliding doors and hinged doors. One set slides, and the other set swings open on hinges. Well, now that we have that sorted. 😉 Only kidding. There is a bit more to it than that.

LivSpace.com shares these advantages of Hinged Doors:

  • Improved visibility

It is easier to spot things when you open the doors as you get the entire view of the wardrobe. Unlike sliding doors, hinged doors do not conceal one side of the closet.

  • More hanging space

With hinged doors, you can hang your accessories like sling bags, scarves or belts on the back of the doors.

  • Color and finish options

Since hinged doors have been in the market for a long time, they come in various styles and colors.

Hinged doors are a more traditional option for many closets. They are the typical choice for walk in closets. One disadvantage of hinged doors is the space they take up when the door opens and closes. You must take that into consideration when arranging furniture in your room.

On the flip side, or shall we say the sliding side,  LivSpace.com shares these advantages of sliding doors:

  • Extensive length

Sliding door closets favor expansive spaces that can house a lengthy closet.

  • Contemporary style

One will have to agree that sliding door closets add an air of panache to any room. Mirrored sliding doors can give you both style and functionality in one very easy-to-maintain package.

Sliding doors are great for reach in closets. They are more compact and don’t take up any floor space. Not to mention the sleek contemporary design which appeals to many. The nature of  sliding doors does mean you can’t see the entire closet all at once. One solution is to keep off season clothes on one side, and current outfits on the other.

How to Hang Sliding Doors

If you enjoy DIY then you can hang sliding doors yourself. WikiHow has step by step instructions to help you get started. They also offer this advice:

Sliding doors are a stylish, modern way to finish your closet. With the right hardware, installing sliding closet doors on your own is simple. The key to professional-looking doors is taking the right measurements before your installation.

This is a situation where the old adage, “Measure twice, cut once” definitely holds true. If you take time to carefully measure and prepare you will have lovely sliding doors before you know it.

We Can Slide or Swing

Still unsure which type of door is right for you? Closet Envy is your closet renovation expert! We can help you determine if sliding closet doors or hinged doors are the right fit for your space and your needs. Schedule your free consultation today!
